Blackened Perforated Steel Staircase in The Sanctuary, Bromley, London
ZedWorks undertook the technical design, fabrication and installation of this laser-cut, perforated mild-steel staircase and walkway for a converted property in Bromley.
The dog-legged configuration allowed the stair to sit lightly within a tight volume, with the perforated treads reducing visual weight and letting light pass between levels.
A simple spindle balustrade completes the piece, keeping the detailing slender while giving the stair a clear architectural rhythm.
All of the metalwork is chemically blackened giving it a muted, matt patina that pairs beautifully with the timber ceiling and pale walls.
We developed the stair in collaboration with ODACE, resolving the structural performance of the dog-leg and ensuring the perforated treads met the necessary stiffness and deflection requirements.
The result is a piece that feels robust but visually light, tying the upper and lower floors together with a single consistent material language.
