Perforated Steel Staircase & Balustrade in East Dulwich, London
This perforated mild-steel staircase and balustrade were designed and fabricated as part of a contemporary refurbishment of a London terrace in East Dulwich.
The staircase allows light to filter from a large second-floor skylight down to the ground floor, with the perforated treads and risers creating a gentle transparency that brightens what was previously a confined space.
The slim, full-height steel spindles maximise usable stair width, giving the stair a refined and efficient profile.
The perforation pattern was created using precision punching technology, and each step was folded to form a smooth rounded nose with all welds concealed neatly to the rear.
The steel has been left in a raw, unfinished state, allowing the natural fabrication markings to become part of the visual character of the piece.
