Laser-Cut Mild-Steel Yellow Balustrades, The National Gallery
This project forms part of the wider Roden Centre for Creative Learning at The National Gallery, where we fabricated and installed a series of laser cut mild-steel balustrades in a durable spray finish
The vertical fin balustrade system creates a crisp, rhythmic edge to the stair and mezzanine.
The slim profile of the fins helps preserve light within the circulation spaces while providing robust safety performance for public use.
The balustrades were fabricated from precisely lasercut mild-steel components, assembled with careful precision to maintain clean sightlines and consistent spacing and to align with the Exhibition Wall sitting directly below. Further complexity arose from the building’s strict conservation requirements: with priceless artworks nearby, all site welding was prohibited, demanding a carefully considered fabrication and assembly approach.
Conceived by Lawson Ward Studio, with timber treads crafted by S&R Interiors and illuminated handrail by The Light Lab, the finished result showcases a seamless collaboration.
These elements sit alongside further metalwork delivered by the team across the Centre, supporting the architectural language developed by Lawson Ward Studio.
