The Turning Tide — Sculptural Public Seating Installation, London

The-Turning-Tide-©-Luke-ODonovan-mid-res-10-of-18-scaled-min

The Turning Tide is a sculptural public seating installation designed by MVUU Studio and selected as one of five winning projects in the London Festival of Architecture 2022 Pews and Perches competition.

The piece takes the familiar form of a bench and twists it into a dynamic, rising volume, constructed from recyclable timber and a bespoke steel framework.

Beneath the seating, a gabion-style steel cage anchors the structure and is filled with stones inscribed with messages from members of the local community — a physical and symbolic foundation representing collective action and shared responsibility.

Fabricated entirely by ZedWorks, the project demonstrates how architectural metalwork can support narrative, social engagement, and environmental awareness, transforming public furniture into a catalyst for conversation and change.
