Oiled Steel Staircase with Laser-Cut Balustrade, Vauxhall, London
ZedWorks designed, fabricated and installed this bespoke steel staircase as part of a contemporary refurbishment of a four-storey Victorian terrace in Vauxhall, London.
The staircase combines an oiled mild-steel structure with laser-cut balustrade uprights, each incorporating a subtle curved detail that softens the geometry while maintaining a crisp architectural line.
The balustrade is paired with a CNC-turned oak handrail, providing a warm tactile contrast to the steelwork and guiding the stair through the full height of the house.
The project was developed in close collaboration with Joe Wright Architects, whose architectural approach balanced strong material expression with careful detailing across the multi-level interior.
The steel was finished with a hand-applied oiled treatment, preserving the natural character of the metal and allowing fabrication marks to remain subtly visible. The oak handrail was supplied by Haldane UK Ltd, with CNC turning ensuring consistency along the stair’s full length.
